News from the District Governor

DG BrigidFirst of all, a very sincere ‘Happy New Year' to you all from myself and Mike; I do hope your clubs had a productive Christmas period and then all of you took the opportunity for some rest and relaxation at some stage over the Christmas period. I managed to resist the temptation to turn on the laptop on Christmas Day as I was fully involved acting as host for all the family and extended family for Christmas Day however it was back to ‘work' on Boxing Day finalising the Convention Programme.

I am taking the opportunity to have a few days at home in Ireland in the first week in January before flying back in to Birmingham to join Mike as he leads the 1st VDG training in Solihull. I hope to be able to use this free time for me to get some more work done fleshing out some more of the convention programme. My intention is to finish the business session by lunchtime on the Saturday - including presentation of District competitions which will be presented as they occur within the various committee reports which will be taken en bloc as is now the custom.

In the afternoon I will be introducing a session called ‘Celebrate Success' which will give the opportunity for nominated clubs/advisors to blow their own trumpet where they have shown success in youth and other activities/projects or success in membership retention or extension. All too often we do not take the opportunity to do this and it is something that needs to be done so that we can share our ideas with others.

On the Sunday morning after an initial Q & A session with the International Director, Per, there will be three workshops run concurrently:

I do hope you will join in enthusiastically with these sessions which will be held in the main hall. Following this there will be time for ‘elevenses' to top up the inner person before leaving for home.

Sad News

I am sorry to report the passing to higher service of two past Presidents, both stalwart Lions, from Jersey Lions Club. In November the club mourned the passing of Past President Val Huelin aged 71 after being ill for some time and then in December Past President David Picot died unexpectedly after a relatively short illness. December also saw the death of Ray Ballanger from Goring, Woodcote and District. Our thoughts go with those they leave behind.

May they rest in Peace
